The Choro is a Brazilian instrumental music that emerged in the late 19th century, blending European dance forms with African rhythms and syncopation. It is known for its virtuosic melodies, rich harmonies, and lively, expressive phrasing. Though often written out, it has an improvisational spirit similar to jazz, making it both technically challenging and deeply expressive. We can develop this in a 'real time' setting with a simulated backing band.
WHY IS IT GOOD FOR A JAZZ MUSICIAN TO PLAY CHOROS?
Choros are excellent for jazz flutists because they develop technical agility, rhythmic precision, and harmonic awareness, all of which are essential for jazz improvisation. The intricate melodies and fast passages enhance finger dexterity and articulation, while the syncopated rhythms strengthen a flutist’s groove and phrasing. The rich harmonic progressions, often featuring chromaticism and modulations, can help you internalize complex chord changes, much like in jazz. Additionally, the genre has a strong tradition of melodic improvisation and expressive phrasing, making it a great training ground for fluency and creativity in jazz performance.
This collection includes PDFs written for flute, and backing tracks tailored to the lead sheets to help you develop your rhythmic feel and phrasing.
